Adventure experiences in North Wales

Correction of the geographical location: Before I write the summary, I would like to point out that Zip World Penrhyn Quarry is not located in Bangor, Northern Ireland, but near Bangor in Gwynedd, North Wales, England. Northern Ireland is a separate part of the United Kingdom, while Bangor is in Wales. I will write the summary accordingly for Zip World Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales.

Top attractions in North Wales

Zip World Penrhyn Quarry is one of the most exciting attractions in North Wales and a paradise for adventure seekers. Located in a former slate quarry near Bangor, this site offers a unique combination of adrenaline-pumping activities, stunning nature, and a hint of industrial history. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its importance as a historical and scenic gem. Zip World has transformed the disused quarry into a modern adventure center that attracts visitors from around the world seeking thrills and spectacular views.

Family-friendly activities in North Wales

The centerpiece of Zip World Penrhyn Quarry is the "Velocity 2," which is considered the fastest zip line in the world and the longest in Europe. This attraction consists of four parallel zip lines stretching almost 1.6 kilometers and reaching a height of about 150 meters above the turquoise waters of the quarry lake. Participants can reach speeds of over 160 km/h, providing an unparalleled adrenaline experience. The ride begins with an ascent in a former military truck to the starting point, where participants first complete a smaller practice zip line before heading to the main course. The views during the ride over the mountains of Snowdonia and the blue waters of the quarry lake are breathtaking, making the experience unforgettable.

Historical sites in Gwynedd

In addition to Velocity 2, Zip World Penrhyn Quarry also offers other activities appealing to different adventure seekers. The "Quarry Karts" are another main attraction and the only mountain kart track in the UK. These three-wheeled, gravity-powered karts race down a 3-kilometer track, through twists, tunnels, and chicanes, offering a mix of speed and challenge amidst the rugged quarry landscape. For those looking for a more leisurely experience, there is the "Quarry Flyer," a shorter zip line that still provides impressive views of the quarry lake and is ideal for families or less daring visitors.

Activities at Penrhyn Quarry

A relatively new addition is the "Aero Explorer," a hybrid attraction combining elements of a roller coaster with a zip line. This 400-meter track traverses the uneven terrain of the quarry, providing a high-speed experience that has gained popularity through viral videos on social media. For history enthusiasts, there is also the "Penrhyn Quarry Tour," a guided tour in a red ex-military truck that takes visitors up to a height of 450 meters above sea level - about as high as the Empire State Building. The tour offers insights into the quarry's past, once one of the largest slate extraction sites in the world, and ends with a small refreshment such as tea and traditional Welsh cake.

The landscape of Penrhyn Quarry is an experience in itself. The quarry, which played a central role in the slate industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, has transformed into a dramatic backdrop since its closure. The steep rock walls, the brightly blue lake, and the surrounding mountains of Snowdonia National Park create an impressive atmosphere that allows for both adventure and contemplation. Old buildings and structures from the quarry era are still present, enhancing the sense of being in a place with deep history.

For those not participating in the activities themselves, there are opportunities to watch the action. The onsite Blondin Restaurant offers a modern setting with large windows and a viewing terrace from which to admire the zip liners and the landscape. Here, locally inspired dishes are served, providing a welcome break after or during the adventure. The entire facility is designed to welcome visitors of all kinds, whether for an action-packed day or a relaxed outing in nature.

The experience of downhill karting (and I assume all the others that were on offer) was very fun. The downhill karting involves getting a truck up to the top of the quarry, when you then travel down the hill in a gravity powered kart, one by one. Each rider is permitted two runs. For the price we paid (appx £45 pp + £5 booking fee), we were shocked to find a paid car park on arrival. Why is there a paid car park in the middle of a quarry?! It's an added expense and faff which slightly kills the mood. And then they tell you that you need to purchase gloves in order to participate, plus rent overalls if you wish to. It seems like an already expensive activity just keeps getting more and more expensive which is a shame because without all these extra, rather unnecessary fees, I would have been inclined to pay for a second activity while I was there.

Mega simple as that apart from having to pay to park as you have no other choice suppose it helps to pay for the owners helicopter

Beware, called in for coffee and a cake to check facilities for a potential future visit with a family of five.parked in disabled spot for 45 mins and charged £3.20 after spending £12 on three drinks!! Suppose they need to pay for the expensive infrastructure somehow. Lost a repeat visit with a family of five who could have spent more. But petty parking charge has lost you any repeat visit. Very poor

One of the best things I’ve ever done. I came on the 26th feb. Our slot was 2pm and there was no sitting around waiting, everything was on time and staff were very efficient. The staff were all absolutely lovely and I wish I had their names but they were all brilliant which really eased the nerves which is important to me as I have an anxiety/panic disorder, I felt very comfortable and at ease. Everything felt very safe, our equipment and harnesses were cross checked by multiple staff members, multiple times throughout and when on the wire. The zipline wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, the view was beautiful! We enjoyed every moment :) There is also a cafe with nice food and drinks, and clean bathrooms, and a cute little gift shop. If you’re nervous about going, don’t be! Amazing experience. Thanks!

Velocity 2 is a great adrenaline rush. The feeling of flying is just hard to imagine but is so amazing. Staff are brilliant, from check in to the instructors on the activity. Highly recommended

Amazing day, really well organised and professional. Went really smoothly and put your fears at rest with some humour as some people were a bit anxious!! Only thing that was missing was the actual speed at which we were plummeting down the zip line. Be a nice touch if they could give an exact speed but probably not possible?!

Booked online.. areived and was able to do the ride. No problems, and the staff were great. My camera (rented from them) didn't download correctly.. but they sorted within 48 hours, and nothing was lost. The only point to moan is the car parking. There is a fee. I did download the app before arrival with no issues. As there is nowhere else to park or visit, it seems a bit of a stretch to get people to pay, a small amount non the less, for the day to park. Otherwise it was great.

Was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend it. Staff are lovely and friendly, and helpful. You have to pay for parking not too bad £3.60 for all day, but you have to download an app.. ringgo. It's worth downloading before you arrive. Bar/drinks and food are also available.

We had great fun doing the downhill quarry karting. It's a bit like real life Mario Kart! Unfortunately one star was lost because there is a £3 parking fee when it is necessary to have a car to get here and it's on one of these annoying apps where you have to spend 10 minutes trying to download the app and log in. Just add £3 to my ticket and don't charge for parking. There is also a £5 booking fee which is very cheeky when you're already spending £85 on two tickets. It's something you'd expect going to Disneyland, not going to Wales. Oh also remember to bring gloves for this activity because if you forget then you have to pay another £3 to buy some. Also remember to bring warm clothes because overalls are another £5.
